One of the most beautiful sights a person can witness is the pallu of a saree flowing in the wind without a care in the world. And if you want a saree that can pull off that moment the best, what could be better than a Lehariya saree? It literally has the word ‘leher’ in its name, which is a Hindi word meaning ‘waves.’ I am sure by now you are intrigued with the concept of Lehariya sarees. Before you begin your shopping for the best Lehariya sarees on Mirraw, let’s learn some more about these sarees.
Lehariya sarees are a vibrant and traditional form of tie-dye textile art that originated in Rajasthan, India. Which perfectly captures the rippling effect of the patterns on these sarees. Lehariya sarees are known for their distinctive diagonal or zigzag patterns that resemble the waves of a flowing river.
These sarees are typically made from lightweight and breathable fabrics like chiffon, georgette, or silk, which brings out the wave patterns beautifully. They are adorned with colorful tie-dye patterns created by a resist-dyeing technique. The fabric is tightly twisted and tied at intervals using threads, creating areas that resist the dye. The saree is then dyed in vibrant hues, resulting in beautiful and unique patterns.
The history of Lehariya sarees dates back to the colorful and culturally rich state of Rajasthan in India. The art of tie-dyeing, which gives rise to the distinctive Lehariya patterns, has been practiced in Rajasthan for centuries. The technique is believed to have been brought to the region by the Khatri community, known for their expertise in textile printing and dyeing. Lehariya sarees gained popularity as a traditional attire during festive occasions and celebrations, and they continue to be an integral part of Rajasthani culture. Over the years, the art of Lehariya has evolved, with new color combinations and design variations emerging, but the essence of this vibrant and elegant art form remains deeply rooted in Rajasthan's rich heritage.
Lehariya sarees are known for their exceptional quality and craftsmanship. These sarees are meticulously handcrafted by skilled artisans who possess a deep understanding of the tie-dye technique. The quality of the fabric used in Lehariya sarees is carefully chosen to ensure a lightweight and comfortable drape. The tie-dye patterns are executed with precision, resulting in clear and well-defined waves that run diagonally or in zigzag patterns. The colors used in Lehariya sarees are vibrant and long-lasting, maintaining their richness even after repeated wear and wash. The durability and attention to detail in the construction of Lehariya sarees make them a cherished garment that can be passed down through generations, preserving their beauty and quality over time. Hence, they make for excellent family heirlooms.
Something as beautiful as a Lehariya saree cannot be limited to just one type. And it isn’t. There are several popular types of Lehariya sarees that showcase the diverse range of colors, patterns, and fabric choices. Here are the different types of Lehariya sarees:
These sarees feature the classic Lehariya patterns in vibrant colors like red, yellow, green, and blue. They often have contrasting borders and pallus, adding to their traditional charm.
This variation combines the tie-dye technique of Lehariya with the intricate bandhani, or tie and dye, patterns. The result is a mesmerizing blend of two traditional art forms, creating a visually captivating saree.
Dual Lehariya sarees showcase a combination of two different Lehariya patterns in contrasting or complementary colors. This creates a unique and eye-catching visual effect, adding an element of intrigue to the saree.
In geometric Lehariya sarees, the classic wavy patterns are combined with geometric shapes like triangles, squares, or chevrons. This fusion of patterns adds a contemporary twist to the traditional Lehariya design.
Pastel Lehariya sarees are characterized by their soft and subtle color palette. These sarees often feature delicate shades of pink, lavender, mint green, or peach, creating a graceful and elegant look.
Silk Lehariya sarees are crafted using lustrous silk fabric, adding a touch of luxury to the vibrant patterns. These sarees are often favored for weddings and special occasions, exuding elegance and grandeur.
